On March 30th, Marvel will unleash their first major project of 2022 as episodes of Moon Knight will start dropping weekly on Disney Plus. Not much is known about this project short of a few trailers and the official synopsis from Marvel and Disney:

“The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.”

Context and Background

Moon Knight is expected to branch the MCU into a new, darker corner of the world as it introduces Egyptian mythology as well as some more supernatural elements, paving the way for future projects such as the upcoming TV show Werewolf by Night and movie reboot Blade. Because it is the first project following this particular path, it seems as if it will be a bit removed from the rest of the MCU, at least at first, just like the first Guardians of the Galaxy was when it first brought the MCU into space.

This means that the show might be a nice breath of fresh air, freed from a lot of the increasingly complicated continuity that has become the norm for MCU projects of late. With that being said, we can look at the comics to see where there might be some connections to other MCU/Marvel projects that you can bone up on before the first episode drops on March 30th.

What to Watch

The biggest connection is Moon Knight’s involvement with the team Midnight Sons, a group of supernatural heroes who debuted in the comics in the 90s. For those of you who want to catch up on the members that could make an appearance in the upcoming Moon Knight show, take a look at our suggested viewing list below, based on characters who have been a part of the Midnight Sons at one point or another in comics history:

• Doctor Strange
  • The Sorcerer Supreme has had one solo film and has appeared in a few other movies in the MCU, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. His next appearance is this May’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

• Black Knight (Dane Whitman)
  • Though Black Knight hasn’t made his official debut in the MCU quite yet, his alter-ego, Dane Whitman, has. Played by Kit Harrington, Whitman is a supporting character in last year’s The Eternals and is featured in the post-credits scene along side Black Knights iconic Ebony Blade.

  • Speaking of that post-credits scene in The Eternals, Dane Whitman isn’t the only character in the scene. Though we don’t see him, Whitman is talking to an off-screen Blade, voiced by Mahershala Ali, who will be playing the character in the upcoming reboot. Though the character has yet to appear on-screen, there was a trilogy of Blade films in the late 90s/early 2000s starring Wesley Snipes as the titular undead vampire hunter.

• Ghost Rider
  • Several versions of the flame-headed skeletal motorcycle riding spirit of vengeance have appeared across movies and TV shows, including the Johnny Blaze and Robby Reyes. He has yet to appear in the MCU, however rumors suggest that The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus will portray the character in an upcoming project.

• Punisher
  • With characters such as Kingpin and Matt Murdock making the leap from Netflix to the MCU, it is only a matter of time for Jon Berenthal’s Frank Castle to show up in an MCU property. His portrayal of the Punisher is one of the highlights from Netflix’s short-lived Defenders-verse, and both the actor and fans of the show are eager to see him return. Marvel has been keen on making Punisher a thing since before the MCU was a thing, resulting in three different live-action films.
