Boss Rush Banter: Will We Ever See an Open World Avatar: The Last Airbender Game?

2–3 minutes

It’s been years since the Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, graced us with its presence and invaded our imaginations. The thought of having powers that control various elements in a vast and lively world leaves me in awe. I remember my uncle who did not really watch cartoons become excited when he received DVDs of the show for Father’s Day one year. This franchise, though it has a few games in existence, truly deserves something a bit bigger and a little grander.

By a bit bigger, and a little grander, I don’t mean M. Night Shymalan’s version with a crammed storyline packed in a short period of time or mispronounced names of main characters. No, I mean something new, polished, and just as chalk fall of magic and storytelling. Something of a grand adventure that rivals that of the series itself, but what could that look like?

I figured this adventure would naturally be in the genre of role-playing. The fact that this world has many areas within the television series, one could imagine the possibilities. First couple of locations that come to mind are the water tribes in the north and south, the air temples, Ba Sing Se, and the Fire Nation Capital. You would explore these areas and much more with the help of your sky bison, Appa. Travel the skies as you progress the story, imagine Skies of Arcadia: Legends.

When I was thinking about gameplay, mechanics, and the how to incorporate the elements, I immediately thought of the Golden Sun series. In that game you collect elemental beings called Djinn. You could mix and match the 4 elemental types of wind, water, fire, and earth and by doing so create different abilities that help you traverse the land, solve puzzles, and affect battle. You could easily have Anng, Toph, Katara, and Zuko combined abilities for various affects both in battle and in the overworld. Maybe you can play as Sokka, MoMo, Iroh, or even the cabbage merchant. This could create some unique gameplay based on the type of characters in the party and allow for interesting gameplay dynamics.

If we were to see a game like this in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, what developer would you like to see make it? Have you watched any of the series? Would you buy an Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG or would you prefer a different genre all together? Please tell us your thoughts.
