Return to Monkey Island Officially Announced for 2022 Release

The Monkey Island point-and-click adventure series finally resurfaces! Return to Monkey Island will be a collaborative effort between Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox, Devolver Digital, and Lucasfilm Games. Many fans of the Monkey Island games can breathe a sigh of relief to see that one of the series’ original creators Ron Gilbert is involved in Return to Monkey Island. The trailer even pokes fun at this, with a cheeky skull that exclaims, “Ron Gilbert told me he’d never make another Monkey Island, unless…” Unfortunately, the talking skull was lobbed into the sea before completing its thought. If we hear more from this bonehead, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, feast your grubby pirate eyes on this here trailer.

The Monkey Island series first debuted in 1990 with The Secret of Monkey Island. The PC game won the hearts of players with its clever puzzle design, slightly crass humor, and memorable characters. It was instant classic! And now, 32 years later, it remains a classic. The Monkey Island series last saw life in 2010 with remakes of its first 2 games.

Return to Monkey Island breaks a 12 year drought with a fully-fledged follow-up! As of this writing, there’s no information regarding which platforms Return to Monkey Island will be playable on at launch. With PAX East 2022 right around the corner, chances are high that we’ll learn more about the game and its release details soon.
