Boss Rush Banter: How Many Players Are Ideal for Super Smash Bros?

2–3 minutes

Super Smash Bros. has been a staple in the multiplayer community for more than 20 years now, and although the DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is finished, the game isn’t going anywhere. Whether it’s playing online, with a close friend, or a huge game night, Smash continues to be fun, regardless of the group. But these different ways of playing are each incredibly different. How many players do you enjoy playing with?

First off, we have the classic 1-on-1 battles. These battles are close and personal, often involving more direct hits than ranged attacks. Fighters like Marth and Captain Falcon may have better luck than someone like Mega Man or Solid Snake, who’s movesets rely heavily on being far away from their opponents. These battles are also nice because they can be quick. If you’re playing on stock, you don’t need to wait for everyone else to get knocked out when you lose. You just go back to the character select screen and give it another go.

Three players is always awkward in my opinion. I have two older brothers, which means that most of the time, we played the awkward game of “who-can-hide-from-the-fight-the-longest.” With three players, there’s usually two people fighting it out, with a third person trying to ignore the fight entirely. It still makes for a fun time, though may leave you wishing you had an extra player.

Now four player battles are where Super Smash Bros. truly shines. With four people, there’s just enough chaos going on for the battle to never get boring. Two players can be duking it out, and if another player is trying to hide, the fourth player is often trying to chase them. You’re constantly changing opponents. Plus, more players means more variety in characters. We can have Link and Lucina clashing swords while Fox is sniping from the sidelines, all the while Villager is just knocking trees over.

Ever since Super Smash Bros. Wii U, eight player Smash has been available. Now these battles with seven or eight players can go either way for me. With enough people, it can get chaotic quickly, and it may feel like you never have a moment to breathe, which can feel AWESOME. While some stages lend themselves better to larger numbers, with multiple different areas to fight, others, like Final Destination, make it almost too hard to enjoy. I’m up in the air when it comes to these larger battles, though it really comes down to the stage.

If I had to answer our question today, I’d say I prefer four to six players. What about you? Do you enjoy big, epic battles with as many people as possible? Or do you prefer smaller, more personal matches between you and one opponent? Let us know your thoughts in a comment, or hop on overs to our Discord and let us know what you think.
