Uncharted Movie Tops $400 Million Globally

There’s something in the water with regards to Sony Pictures’ Uncharted film featuring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas, and that something is dollar bills!

Uncharted, which is based on the massively popular Naughty Dog gaming series of the same name, features a completely original plot that follows Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan traveling the globe and has managed to cross the $400 million mark worldwide at the box office. This essentially makes Uncharted one of the most successful video game adaptations out of the legions of video game adaptations to pick from.

Reporting on the box office success of Uncharted, Forbes reported that the movie has grossed $147.5 million domestic (versus its production budget of $120 million), placing it third among video game adaptations currently behind Sonic the Hedgehog ($148M) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($181M). Globally, Uncharted follows behind Rampage ($428M), Detective Pikachu ($433M), and Warcraft ($438M). At the rate it is going, Uncharted is on pace at the box office with sci-fi epic Dune (2021).

Uncharted went through a production hell having been originally announced in 2010 with David O. Russell (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) proposed to both write and direct the film and Mark Wahlberg to star as Nathan Drake. It now appears that Sony Pictures can pat themselves on the back as their labor has borne some delicious fruit in the entertainment realm. This news will most definitely springboard a sequel that the movie’s post-credits scene has undoubtedly set up.
