Upon the announcement of June’s PS Plus offerings, something got my nostalgic infected brain thinking. You have Nickelodeon All Star Brawl, appealing to those Nickelodeon kids. You have Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros., which is now just a celebration of all gaming. And in the near future, you have Multiverse’s…Multiverse, which is a weird blend of Warner Bros., DC Comics, and Cartoon Network characters all throwing down. With all these new challengers approaching, what is your favorite nostalgia fighter?
It’s pretty easy to come up with a nostalgia fighter. Take your favorite series as a kid, wait until that target market has disposable income, and then release a fighting game that doesn’t match that series’ brand. Speaking as a 90’s kid who watched Nickelodeon, played Nintendo, and knew of all these characters, I can’t lie and say I’ve had no interest in these games. I don’t really need all these characters beating the crap out of each other, but if it’s the only genre I’m getting, I’ll at least take a look at it.
Granted, I can argue as to why companies produce of these games. You can’t tell me that the team behind Nickelodeon All Star Brawl poured their soul into development because the SNICK lineup from 1992 meant so much to them. They know millennials will buy it because of the fluffy memories Invader Zim gave them in those strange years of adolescence.
My personal favorite is the anime based J-Stars Victory VS+. This 3D arena fighter brought all of the big names from Shonen Jump into one big fan-service title, acting as a celebration of the weekly magazine. My favorite part is the fact they included the really obscure comedy characters on the roster. Imagining Sasuke Uchiha dealing with Bobobo from Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is where it gets fun.
