In a surprise announcement during Sunday’s Xbox & Bethesda Showcase, Atlus confirmed that three of their iconic Persona series of games will appear for the first time on Xbox series consoles beginning this October.
Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal were all announced to be headed to Xbox in an effort to bring more Japanese centric titles to the brand.
The Persona series began in 1996 on the Sony PlayStation, and is a spin-off of the long running Megami Tensei franchise of Japanese RPGs. The Persona games focus on protagonists in high school who must balance their schooling and social lives while defending the world from otherworldly evils.
Each of these three games are enhanced versions of their original release, though they have been previously released in different formats.
Persona 3 Portable came out in 2009 for the PlayStation Portable, and is a port of the 2006 PS2 title Persona 3. The PSP release features a new female protagonist, along with many gameplay adjustments. Most conversations and exploring is performed via point-and-click methods and still images however, as opposed to the original games 3D exploration and animation.
Persona 4 Golden likewise is an enhanced port of the 2008 PS2 JRPG. Initially debuting on the Vita in 2012, it later made the move to Steam in 2020, and has been highly requested for consoles ever since.
Persona 5 Royal is the only one of the three titles to have been released on home consoles before, and is a remake of the 2016 Persona 5, released on the PS3 and PS4 systems. Royal introduces new characters, reworked dungeons, and a revamped combat system, among many other additions.
A release date was given only for Persona 5 Royal, which will hit Xbox home consoles on October 21, 2022. Fans of the latter two titles will have to wait a little longer for a release date confirmation.
