Bloomberg first reported the unfortunate status of the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake letting gamers everywhere know that the game was “delayed indefinitely”.
The remake of BioWare’s 2003 role-playing game, took a major blow following the firing of design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor earlier this month. The pair were reportedly dismissed shortly after the studio finalized a demo of the game to show to its production partners Lucasfilm and Sony. The developing team at Austin, Texas-based Aspyr Media are currently left trying to figure out what comes next.
Aspyr’s studio heads are said to have already informed staff that the demo hadn’t met internal expectations and that work on the game was being paused while the company planned to seek new development opportunities. Aspyr Media is now looking “for new contracts and development opportunities”. Saber Interactive was brought on board to aid with development this past May, and it’s suggested the developer could now take over production of the remake entirely.
The remake of the 2003 RPG hasn’t had any substantial news since its initial announcement during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, which simply featured Revan with a red lightsaber. Set 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire, Knights of the Old Republic tells a Jedi versus Sith story where the overall revelation of who and what the lead character is set the gaming world on fire following the game’s initial release.
Speculation now has the game being pushed to a 2025 release if Aspyr, Saber Interactive, and parent company Embracer are able to get things sorted with this high-profile project.
