Supermassive Games Acquired by Nordisk Games

Nordisk Games has acquired developer Supermassive Games. The UK-based game developer is best known for its branching narrative titles, like Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and this year’s The Quarry.

Nordisk took out a 30.7 per cent stake in the company last year but has now committed to a full 100 per cent. This is all being done “to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them,” says Nordisk Games.

News of the acquisition was shared in a release on Supermassive’s website today.

“It’s been a little over a year since Nordisk Games made an initial investment in Supermassive Games and our vision for the future,” explained Supermassive Games CEO Pete Samuels in the announcement post. “We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games and Nordisk Games’ ownership only enhances that. I’m hugely excited about where the security offered by this partnership, and continued access to the expertise within Nordisk Games will take us next.”

Founded in 2008, Supermassive Game currently employs over 200 people based in Guildford, UK. Supermassive joins the likes of Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios and Metroid Dread studio MercurySteam within the Nordisk Games umbrella. An official price for the buyout hasn’t been shared. Nordisk Games is owned by entertainment company Nordisk Film, which is a part of Egmont, a leading Nordic media group. Supermassive Games will be the ninth studio that Nordisk Games has invested in. This is also their first investment in a UK studio and only the second outside of the Nordics, as the group looks to invest in more European studios.

Nordisk Games CEO Mikkel Weider stated: “In acquiring 100% of the studio we’ll be able to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them.”

While many still feel Supermassive Games has never managed to hit the heights of Until Dawn on PS4 in the time since 2015, The Dark Pictures Anthology has proven to be a strong series for the studio which has gotten better with each new entry with the next entry, this year’s The Devil in Me set to up the ante even more. With further backing from Nordisk Games, the quality of these titles could well improve even more in the years to come. Unless Bandai Namco has a deal in place, it’s presumed the publishing of the franchise will now switch to Nordisk Games.
