She-Hulk: Attorney at Law aired its sixth episode this week and is already drawing mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.

She-Hulk centers on Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) as she aims to find her place in the world with her newfound Hulk powers. The show is airing weekly on Disney Plus with new episodes releasing every Thursday.

The show has leaned heavily into its sitcom format, and that was on full display this episode. How does it hold up? Let’s find out.

Synopsis

It’s an unexpected wedding episode, and Walters travels to be the bridesmaid for one of her high school friends. 

When she arrives at the wedding, her friend Lulu (Patti Harrison) asks her not to use her Hulk form and upstage her on her big day. Walters complies, but her newfound rival Titania (Jameela Jamil) shows up.

Walters struggles through the wedding but meets Josh (Trevor Salter), and the two hit it off. Josh expresses his interest in Walters rather than She-Hulk. 

Walters and Titania exchange haymakers with Walters resorting to her Hulk form to embarrass Titania. 

Back in Los Angeles, Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) and Mallory (Renée Elise Goldsberry) team to represent Craig Hollis (David Pasquesi) AKA Mr. Immortal. 

Hollis has regeneration powers that prevent him from dying. He uses those powers to avoid confrontations with his numerous ex-wives. Nikki helps reach an agreement with the ex-wives in an unorthodox manner.

After settlement, Mallory and Nikki are on the computer and visit the site called Intelligentsia after it came up during their day. They find a host of hateful content and death threats all aimed at Walters.

Nikki leaves Walters a message about the site and the episode ends with what appears to be a lab and a mysterious person packing an upgraded syringe.

Breakdown

This episode was a step up from the previous installment. This refreshing tone is such a delight, and Marvel really is doing a great job at its implementation.

The problem is the lack of a true villain. Titania has been the leading candidate so far, but she comes across as more of a petty rival than an actual villain. 

The other option are the men who jumped Walters in the third episode but ultimately failed in their attempt to procure her blood. This seems to be where the episode calls back with the final scene.

Walters spent the majority of the episode in her human form. This was great because at times, I forgot I was watching a show about She-Hulk. The B-story also added to the fun.

Speaking of the B-story, I am all in on seeing the various crazy and wacky cases that come through GLK&H. This really adds to the comedy of the show.

Nikki and Mallory were also a fun pairing that worked well together. Nikki has slowly worked her way up to one of my favorite characters in the show. This episode showcased her more than the past.

As for the A-story, I loved that She-Hulk did its own version of the cliche sitcom wedding episode. This was largely a self-contained episode, but it did provide a few bread crumbs to the future.

And now for the elephant in the room. Many fans are upset with the choice of the show to not build on the Daredevil easter egg at the end of the last episode. 

I get it. Daredevil is my favorite Marvel hero, and I am so excited to see Charlie Cox return. That said, I applaud the show’s choice to not do anything with it.

We all know Daredevil is coming. It’s been in the promotional material since before the premiere. Many have said the promotional content featuring Daredevil has taken away from any surprises, to which I agree.

She-Hulk is a really self-aware show, and I think showrunner Jessica Gao knew the sentiment so she wrote in a swerve. This delay added a bit back to the element of surprise to the point that I’m questioning when Daredevil will show up.

At the end of the day, this unpredictability gives a little bit back in a world that can’t keep secrets very well. Plus, Gao pulled off the ultimate troll of the audience, and I loved it.

Verdict (3.5 out of 5 Stars)

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is not a perfect show, but it’s doing a great job at embracing its uniqueness and trying to be different. For me, it’s working as I’ve largely enjoyed the show so far.

We’re so trained as Marvel fans to expect an obvious hero and villain. So far, this show has the hero, but the villain is still not fully clear. 

For me, that hurts this episode a bit but doesn’t take away from the enjoyable embrace of a unique take on superheroes.

Another down point for me was this is the first episode where the 30-minute episode felt like it hindered the final product. The ending felt a bit rushed but was still good.

I am excited to see where we go from here as we only have three more left in this first season.
