Avatar: The Way of Water got its first full trailer after director James Cameron unveiled the footage during a recent appearance on Good Morning America.
This was the first full trailer revealed since the teaser trailer landed in May, revealing the name. The sequel to the 2009 Avatar is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 16.
The new trailer revealed bits of the sequel’s plot but mostly showcased the special effects and overall environment. Fans did get to see Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and what their lives have looked like since the original film.
The two have started a family since the events of the first film and life among the Na’vi looks peaceful and serene. Fans also got a view of a new threat set to disturb the Na’vi’s land with the native poised to protect their home at all costs.
The trailer also gave glimpses of the other actors in the film including Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss) who are children of Sully and Neytiri. The family’s matriarch appears pregnant during the sequel.
Part of the plot appears to center on Sully and Neytiri trying to teach their children to revere their home of Pandora. It appears humanity has left the Na’vi alone since the original film but have returned with a host of human-run avatars and weapons of war.
As the title indicates, water plays a huge role in the sequel as the trailer showcased numerous shots of the Na’vi swimming in the ocean and interacting with the marine wildlife.
This movie is not only set to return fans to the world of Pandora, but also kick-off the Avatar franchise with a series of sequels running through 2028. Cameron’s plan is to release a new movie every two years with the third installment slated for late 2024.
Cameron claimed in 2020 Avatar 3 was almost completely filmed as Avatar: The Way of Water and the third movie filmed simultaneously. Filming for the sequel began in 2017 with the COVID-19 pandemic slowing production, pushing the original release date from 2021 to 2022.
I’ll be honest, I thought the original film was overrated. I thought it was high on special effects and low on story so I haven’t been invested in the future of the franchise.
That said, I’m willing to try it out again because the new trailer makes the sequel look absolutely stunning. The scenery alone may be what gets me to the movies for this one.
