The Grammys have an astounding 91 categories, and video games are finally a recognized category this year. Nominations were announced for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media.
The nominations go to Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Old World.
Video game soundtracks have been recognized in the past; however, they have been rare. Examples include 2013 when Journey won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media and “Meta Knight’s Revenge”, a song that won Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Cappella earlier this year.
It’s important to draw the distinction for eligibility of nominations compared to the Game Awards–who also announced their nominees earlier this week. The Game Awards consider titles up until November of that year, while the Grammy’s have a different range–reviewing soundtracks between October 1, 2021 through September 30th, 2022. The Grammy’s also differentiate between when an official soundtrack is released versus music heard in-game. This is why you will see “older” games listed.
The 65th Grammy Awards will air February 5th, 2023. Best of luck to all the composers!
