What Writing And Pokémon Have In Common

2–4 minutes

It’s hard to believe that we are just six days from the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. When I was a kid, I counted the days until I could get my mom to take me to GameStop to get the latest version. The first release after I got my driver’s license, I proudly drove my brother and myself to get our copies.

In the writing world, this month is NaNoWriMo. That stands for National Novel Writing Month. Now, you’re sitting here and asking, “What does this have to do with Pokémon?” In the writing world, this month is NaNoWriMo. Which stands for National Novel Writing Month. Now, you’re sitting here and asking, “What does this have to do with Pokémon?”

Hang with me for a second, and I’ll bring this full circle.

For us in the NaNo community, the terms Planners and Pantsers get thrown around, especially in October. Planners, well, they plan their story. Pantsers fly by the seat of their pants.

Earlier this week, I was discussing with a friend, and they mentioned that they wouldn’t be able to use the recently announced Pokémon as it didn’t fit with their team. I promptly replied that I hadn’t started planning a team—mainly because I never do.

When it comes to writing, I’m a planner. When it comes to Pokémon, I’m a pantser.

There’s nothing invalid about going either route. Some people like walking in with a plan and following that plan to the letter. I love the spontaneity of wandering across something on a route; it speaks to me, and I throw a Pokéball at it and add it to my party.

Another problem I face is that there hasn’t been much revealed about the Pokédex. For me, that makes it hard to plan ahead.

Honestly, sometimes I don’t even pick a starter before I start the game. I head into the adventure, meet the three, and decide there on the spot (unless it’s Pokémon Legends: Arceus, then the answer is always Cyndaquill).

So, I have a question for you. Are you a Pokémon Planner or a Pokémon Panster? Will you be building a team, or will you wander blindly into this new region?

The choice is yours. But if you’re planning, I’d suggest starting soon. The clock is ticking.

Make sure you stop by our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord and share your thoughts/answers!
