Boss Rush Banter: Did The Game Awards Get it Right?

The Game Awards have come and gone, but in their wake is plenty of fodder for debate and discussion.

The big winners of the night were Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök, among many other games. Be sure to check out our full recap of the winners and all other coverage from The Game Awards.

Despite the winners, there are many that didn’t achieve gold despite numerous nominations. Horizon Forbidden West came into the award ceremony with seven nominations, but went home with no awards.

All of this begs the question: Did The Game Awards get it right this year?

Of course, this question is largely subjective, as are the awards themselves. That said, there is a case to be made regarding selections and if bias played a role in games getting elevated over others.

The biggest debate likely will surround Horizon Forbidden West not winning in any of its nominated categories. It’s worth pointing out that it lost to both Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök in all of its categories.

That’s got to be worth something, right?

Game of the Year winner Elden Ring will also be another debated winner. In this case, however, I think the voters got it right as Elden Ring has been at the top of many lists all year long, even months after its release.

It’s also worth pointing out that God of War Ragnarök came out a month ago so there will likely be a debate on how much recency bias played a factor in its awards. That’s not to say it’s not an excellent game.

There are so many ways to break down The Game Awards over the coming months. It’ll create some great fodder and, hopefully, encourage lively and respectful discussions and debates.

That’s the fun of award shows. We get to see who wins and either wholeheartedly agree or defend the honor of the rightful winner.

Either way, it should be a good time.

So what do you think? Did The Game Awards get it right? Which game got the biggest snub? What are your overall reactions to the award winners? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord Channel to share your thoughts.
