Hogwarts Legacy Gets Nintendo Switch Release Date, Delay for Last-Gen Consoles

Hogwarts Legacy will experience delays for last-generation consoles, but did get a firm Nintendo Switch release date.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment recently made the announcement that Hogwarts Legacy will launch on the Nintendo Switch on July 25, 2023. As for the delays, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One iterations are now set for April 4, 2023.

The last-gen versions were slated to release alongside the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC editions on Feb. 10, 2023 until the delay. The Switch iteration didn’t have a set release date until the recent announcement.

Avalanche Software is developing the game, which has had numerous delays. Hogwarts Legacy was originally set for a 2021 release when Warner Bros. announced it in late 2020.

Several months later, Warner Bros. announced it wouldn’t make the 2021 date and slid it back to 2022. In mid-2022, Warner Bros. further delayed the game into 2023, setting Feb. 10 as the release date for PC and all consoles, except for the Switch.

There will be a Deluxe Edition for players on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC that includes 72-hour early access starting on Feb. 7. This early access, however, will not be available to the last-gen players.

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action role-playing set in the wizarding world laid out in the Harry Potter books. The game is set at Hogwarts in the 1800s and players assume the role of a student who “holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.”

Players will have the opportunity to customize their character, explore numerous locations from the books and movies, craft potions, learn spells, and make friends.

The game is not a new story from JK Rowling, but rather Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. developed the game in collaboration with her team. This was done to ensure the game aligned with her vision.

The game has endured some controversy in the leadup to its release. This controversy, in part, has centered on Rowling’s comments regarding the transgender community that many have labeled as transphobic.

Still, there are many who remain excited about the game’s release. Preorders for the game are live on the various consoles.
