Simon Pegg to Voice Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black in Hogwarts Legacy

Simon Pegg will lend his voice to the upcoming Harry Potter-themed game Hogwarts Legacy, portraying Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black.

Warner Bros. Interactive Studios revealed Pegg’s role during a recent YouTube video as the game nears its Feb. 10 release date on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Black is the great-great-grandfather of Sirius Black.

The video featured Pegg talking about who the famed headmaster is and how he became revered as the least-favorite leader of Hogwarts. The game is set in the 1890s.

Pegg also talks about how excited he is to finally join the wizarding world as so many other British actors have done before him.

Pegg has numerous acting credits to his name but is most known for playing Shaun in Shaun of the Dead, Scotty in Star Trek (2009), and Gary King in The World’s End. Most recently, he has portrayed Hugh Campbell in The Boys.

Black, a member of the Slytherin House, did not enjoy his time as headmaster, Pegg said. He did not enjoy interacting with children and clips from the game show his curt conversations with the students.

The character of Phineas Nigellus Black also appears in the Harry Potter books, making an appearance in the fifth installment The Order of the Phoenix. His portrait hangs in the room Potter stays in at 12 Grimmauld Place, relaying messages from Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

In the seventh book The Deathly Hallows, Hermione Granger hid the portrait of Black in her magically enlarged bag to prevent him from aiding then-Headmaster Severus Snape. Black provided updates on Hogwarts as Granger and crew searched for Lord Voldemort’s horcuxes.

He later reported the group’s whereabouts to Snape, who subsequently provided them with the Sword of Gryffindor.

Pegg joins a list of other voice actors including Sebastian Croft/Amelia Gething as the playable character; Lesley Nicol as Professor Matilda Weasley; Kandace Caine as Professor Onai; Sohm Kapila as Professor Satyavati Shah; Luke Youngblood as Everett Clopton; Asif Ali as Mahendra Pehlwaan; and Jason Anthony as both the Sorting Hat and Nearly Headless Nick.

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action role-playing game where players will control a student who “holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.”

Players can customize their character, explore locations from the books and movies, craft potions, learn spells, and make friends.

The game has experienced some delays over the years but appears on track for its Feb. 10 release. Those with a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can get the game on April 4 while Nintendo Switch owners must wait until July 25.
