Westworld and The Nevers will no longer be available on HBO Max.
There is no concrete date on when the two science-fiction shows will cease streaming on HBO Max, but Deadline reports their days are numbered. Both shows were top-level Warner Bros. Discovery drama productions intended for the channel HBO.
This announcement comes more than a month after the surprise cancellation of Westworld, once a staple in HBO programming. Westworld ran for four seasons.
The removal of The Nevers from HBO Max also signifies the official cancellation of the Victorian-era sci-fi drama from Joss Whedon.
The show is in the midst of its first season, which Whedon broke into two parts with the second half yet to air. The first six episodes aired in 2021 and the second half will still run though there is no given release date. Deadline reports the story will not end on a cliffhanger and will conclude with the show.
There are no immediate plans for a new home for the two shows. Deadline reporter Nellie Andreeva said she believes the shows will land on a new streaming service Warner Bros. Discovery is developing in the FAST — Free Ad-Supported TV — channel space.
These removals are part of a larger trend of departures from HBO Max, which included original programming. These cuts come on the heels of the WarnerMedia — HBO Max’s parent company — and Discovery Inc. merger back in April of 2022.
Westworld is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name. Over its lifespan, it garnered nine Primetime Emmys among 54 nominations.
It featured a diverse cast that included Anthony Hopkins, Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, and Thandiwe Newton, among others. Newton won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2020.
The Nevers was set in Victorian London and centered on a largely female group called the Touched. Members of the Touched had numerous abnormal abilities. Amalia True (Laura Donnely) and her best friend and inventor Penance Adair (Ann Skelly) were part of the group.
It’s hard to view these moves from a bigger perspective. It seems like the end of days with all the recent shifts, but at some point, we’ll see the endgame.
That’s not to say we will love everything Warner Bros. Discovery does, but these moves will make sense down the road.
It’s hard to imagine that Warner Bros. Discovery would let a show like Westworld just fade away. Sure, popularity seemed to have declined in recent years, but it would still be silly to see it just disappear.
I’m interested in what comes next as Warner Bros. Discovery is already in a crowded streaming world where companies need a way to stand out. So far, these waves have drawn the attention. Now we wait for the plan to materialize.
