While I may not have been as lucky as others, kids have taken “sick” time from school to play a new video game. When I was young and got “sick”, my parents made sure I was in bed resting–and only resting–which completely demotivated me from faking an illness. That aside, adults and kids alike may be tempted to skip out on regular day-to-day responsibilities to enjoy something they are passionate about. Some video games are just so significant to them that they don’t want to miss out on a day one release. Usually, it’s a favorite franchise, and for my current dilemma, it’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Have you ever taken a day off or called out sick to play a video game?
This is a judgment-free zone. Sure, as adults, we need to do what we need to do, but rarely does taking time off on occasion to do something fun result in negative and irreversible consequences (gaming addiction, on the other hand, is something else). Perhaps people who don’t enjoy this media would think it’s weird, but how is this any different than taking the day off after the Superbowl or a Monday or Friday of a weekend holiday?
For me, I try not to make this a habit for every new video game I’m excited for. Rarely do I have the bandwidth to play a video game day one; however, I fully plan on taking Friday, May 12th off. In respect of my co-workers, I intend on making this a planned PTO instead of a last minute sick call. There really isn’t a good reason to screw co-workers last minute if you know when your game of the year releases (unless work won’t give you that day off…).
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is significant enough for me for several reasons. Zelda is my first and favorite franchise. It is also an epic game that I would rather take the time to dive in and enjoy rather than cramming in 30 minutes or an hour after I put my child to bed. I want to be able to give it my full attention. And, of course, this is a game I want to discuss with my friends and write a review here.

No, I will not feel guilty doing so, either. Why? I won’t feel bad because I do have allowed PTO, and I don’t make a habit out of this. For me, Tears of the Kingdom is worth it.
