If you’re trying Metroid Prime Remastered for the first time or are new to the Metroid universe, facing the many enemies and bosses lurking on Tallon IV can be challenging. Elite Pirate Upsilon, otherwise known as the Omega Pirate, is one of the more challenging boss fights in the game and can be faced in the depths of the Phazon Mines.
Quick Guide
After hours of experimentation and helpful advice from the community, we’ve found the following to be the best method for defeating the Omega Pirate:
- Use Power Bombs to destroy vulnerable spots on its leg armor
- Use Super Missiles to destroy vulnerable spots on its shoulders
- Double jump over the electric wave attack and counter with the Plasma Beam.
- Use the Plasma Beam to the destroy shoulder cannons when the Omega Pirate collapses
- Ignore enemies and focus on the Omega Pirate as it attempts to use Phazon to replenish energy
- Using the X-Ray Visor, fire Super Missiles to cause damage when the Omega Pirate is invisible.
- Repeat the process 3-4 times until he is defeated.
For a more detailed guide, see below:
Use Power Bombs to destroy vulnerable spots on its leg armor: the Omega Pirate has bright blue sections on its armor that are points of vulnerability. Unfortunately, the energy absorption defenses in its hand prevents most fire from reaching these spots. One strategy that can work well to damage these areas is to use the Morph Ball to roll near the feet of the Omega Pirate and release a Power Bomb; use the speed burst to quickly escape any counter attacks.
Use Super Missiles to destroy vulnerable spots on its shoulders: Once the armor plating on its legs have been taken out, target the glowing regions on the Omega Pirate’s shoulders. Wait until it drops its hand (the energy absorption defense can interfere with attacks). One or two good hits should destroy them.
Double jump over the electric wave attack: If you are out of reach for its crushing physical blows, the Omega Pirate will unleash a wave of dangerous electricity. These can be tricky to avoid and your vision can be impaired when hit. Wait to jump until the wave is close, then right as it passes beneath you, execute a double-jump.
Use the Plasma Beam to destroy the Plasma Artillery Cannons when the Omega Pirate collapses: The Plasma Artillery Cannons cause massive amounts of damage, so destroying them when you get the chance will greatly ease the risk of dying. Blasting them several times with a fully charged Plasma Beam should do the job.
Ignore enemies and focus on the Omega Pirate as it attempts to use Phazon to replenish energy: Once the armor plates have been destroyed, the Omega Pirate becomes temporarily invisible as it seeks out Phazon to recharge its life. Just before disappearing, it calls Trooper Pirates for backup. You’ll generally have about 10 seconds to target and destroy them before getting your first chance to attack the Omega Pirate as it recharges. Try to take out one or two of the Trooper Pirates (generally three spawn); doing so will give you valuable bombs, missiles, and energy. Be sure to activate your X-Ray Visor.

Using the X-Ray Visor, fire Super Missiles to cause damage when the Omega Pirate is invisible: Once the Omega Pirate begins recharging, it’s time to ignore the Trooper Pirates and concentrate all your attacks on the boss. Use one or two Super Missiles while it’s vulnerable in order to do the most damage. You likely won’t have time to execute more attacks than that.
Repeat the process 3-4 times until he is defeated: Depending on how much damage you inflict while the Omega Pirate is vulnerable and how much time you allow it to recharge, you should only need to repeat this process three or four times to defeat it.
Good luck! You got this!
