Role-playing games do a lot right and one of those is the world building.
These games can whisk you away to a world far, far away, helping you escape the realities of your every-day life. These worlds differ greatly in their design and narrative but a good RPG can firmly put you within the setting.
Alas, these worlds typically aren’t real, and their towns and cities are mere fictional elements. Still, there have been plenty of times when I have wished I could go to one of these worlds.
What about you? Is there an RPG world that you would want to visit in real life?
First and foremost, let’s preface this discussion by saying there is no war or calamity happening when you visit these worlds. Oftentimes, kingdoms or worlds within RPGs are experiencing some kind of world-ending disaster that the hero needs to solve. Let’s just imagine these worlds are in times of peace.
I recently played Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and I fell in love with the Isle of Seiren.
When there aren’t dinosaurs roaming about, this island is a gorgeous place to visit. This island features beaches, mountains, forests, plains, and plenty of other gorgeous natural landscapes. I’d love to come visit and spend a week away from it all here.
Another fun place I’d love to visit would be Gaia, or Gaea, from Final Fantasy VII.
Again, there’s a lot happening in this game that is catastrophic and horrifying so it may be hard to separate the disasters from the world itself. That said, we get a brief glimpse of what Midgar looks like once nature reclaims the world.
There are also a lot of great places to relax with this world including Nibelheim and Chocobo Farm. Wutai Village is also a great area to visit.
The last world I would love to visit is the combined world of Johto and Kanto from the Pokémon games.
I combine the two because in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the two are joined together. Kanto was my first Pokémon region while Johto was my most beloved. I love all the times I get to return to these regions and soak in my time visiting.
Unlike other RPGs, Kanto and Johto don’t really suffer from any world-ending events, but rather annoyances from Team Rocket. You get a great opportunity to visit these regions how you would if you went in real life.
Johto has some of the best lore in any Pokémon game and both regions have such memorable towns and villages. Graphical limitations make these towns smaller than I would imagine they would be in real life but that doesn’t make them any less worth visiting.
There are so many great worlds to visit from RPGs. Everyone will have their own rationale for visiting these spaces, but I think it largely comes down to how memorable these worlds are to you.
