After years of rumors and speculation, Warner Bros. announced the long-awaited squeal for Beetlejuice will release in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
As fans rejoice that Beetlejuice 2 will be released on the big screen, it will be a direct competition with Marvel’s Blade, starring Mahershala Ali that will be released on the same day.
There’s little information available about the follow-up to Tim Burton’s 1988 film about a pesky poltergeist, the filmmaker is returning with Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and Winona Ryder is anticipated to reprise her role as Lydia Deetz. According to Hollywood Reporter, additional cast members include Jenna Ortega, known for her role in Wednesday, as the daughter of Ryder’s character. Justin Theroux is joining the cast in an undisclosed role. Production is scheduled to begin this month, as reported by Deadline.
While it’s unclear if Beetlejuice 2 has a finished script yet, Warner Bros. announced the release date during an active work stoppage, indicating that the project is likely to be far along in development. The studio first revealed the sequel at CinemaCon 2023, where they showcased a brief sizzle reel of logos.
In the first film, a recently deceased married couple, played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, are impossibly irked by the new family that moved into their home, portrayed by Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones as the parents and Winona Ryder as their teenage daughter. Seeking help, the deceased couple contacts Beetlejuice, a devious ghost from the Netherworld, who promises to assist them in haunting the house’s new inhabitants
A critical and commercial hit, Beetlejuice grossed $74.7 million and inspired a Tony-nominated stage musical. After a four-year run interrupted by the pandemic, the show closed on Broadway in January 2023.
