Wyrd Games, producers of the wargame Malifaux and the board game Vagrantsong, have announced their Spring Painting Contest for 2023. Artists around the web are invited to submit their painted miniatures. The theme is Heavy Metal, with a deadline of May 31st.
The contest’s theme is explained via a misadventure of their impish mascot, Waldo.
With folks out and about at GAMA last week, Waldo capitalized on the opportunity to expand his musical horizons by rummaging through a few Wyrd office playlists. Seems he loved what he heard because declared he was going to “collect as much Heavy Metal as possible.” Imagine our surprise when we came in to find loads of iron, lead, and cobalt at our warehouse docks. While we teach Waldo the difference between Heavy Metal and Heavy Metals, here’s a look at our Spring Painting Contest!
–Wyrd Games
There two categories are Single Model and Overachiever. The first category asks for a single model on a base, with a minimum of additional accessories. Overachiever asks that the submission incorporate heated metal.
Entries must feature non-metallic metal (NMM) or true metallic metal (TMM). The former is when normal paints are used to simulate the appearance and shine of metal, the latter is when metallic paint is used. Entries do not need to use miniatures produced by Wyrd Games, but only entries that do are eligible for the Best of Wyrd prize.
The Single Model category prizes are based on a community vote for each model in the category and include:
• 1st Place: $75 in Wyrd webstore credit
• 2nd Place: $50 in Wyrd webstore credit
• 3rd Place: $25 in Wyrd webstore credit
The Overachiever category prizes are based on a community vote for each model in the category and include:

• 1st Place: $100 in Wyrd webstore credit
• 2nd Place: $75 in Wyrd webstore credit
• 3rd Place: $50 in Wyrd webstore credit
‘Best of’ Awards! The Wyrd Games staff will vote to determine the winner for each of the following:
• Best of Single Models Heavy Metal 2023: $100 USD cash prize (via PayPal)
• Best of Overachiever Heavy Metal 2023: $200 USD cash prize (via PayPal)
• Best of Wyrd Miniature Entry: One Nightmare box of the winner’s choice (from a list of available Nightmare boxes)
