By all accounts, Street Fighter 6 is going to be great. The narrative around its predecessor is that Street Fighter 5 started out as a poor entry in the series, sluggishly improving through upgrades and expansions. So, Capcom has gone to great lengths making sure that the sixth mainline game hits with full force on release. An attack on wake up, to borrow FGC jargon. I, for one, can’t wait to get my hands on it!
One of the biggest features of SF6 is its aim to please Street Fighter‘s built-in fanbase, while also giving multiple avenues for new players to join the scene. The most visible three are an RPG story mode, an optional Smash-style control scheme, and – crucially – an extensive training mode that provides progressive lessons on improving with your chosen character. This is huge for both new and returning players hoping to hang tough when they start competitive PvP.
Diving into a new entry with the question Who’s gonna be my main? on my mind is one of the most exciting stages in my relationship with fighting games. For several Street Fighter titles now, I’ve kept coming back to Ibuki. Her speed, arial moveset, and the strong Strider energy she gives, mark her as my favorite World Warrior of all time. Unfortunately, Ibuki didn’t make the cut for SF6‘s starting roster. Will another character peel me away from her? will she ever land as part of an expansion?
In the meantime, newcomer Kimberly, looks to fill Ibuki’s niche. And Ibuki herself stole me away from my old boy, Ken. So, I’ve got options. Whatever the case, it’s been a decade since I felt this kind of hype to play Street Fighter against both old and new players. Experimenting with the roster and seeing who others choose is a big part of that excitement.
More importantly, who will be your main for Street Fighter 6? Why them? And will I see you in the Battle Hub this weekend? Tell us about it down in the comments or over at the Boss Rush Discord!
