Pillars of Eternity saved Obsidian Entertainment. It was a much-lauded hit at a time when they needed it most, and when it seemed the kinds of games the team had made in the past were nearly passé. It proved there was still a significant market for in-depth CRPGs, and it’s unlikely games like Pathfinder: Kingmaker and its spiritual sequel Wrath of the Righteous, the Wasteland revival series, or Disco Elysium would exist without it.
Despite that success, the series’ last release was 2018’s Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire.
At the Xbox Games Showcase, Obsidian showed the latest installment in the series, albeit at some remove. Though set in the same universe, the title Avowed sets distance between this installment and its predecessors.
With this change in title comes a change in perspective. Now played from the first person POV in a fully 3D world, it’s reminiscent of their games Fallout: New Vegas or The Outer Worlds.
What can players expect from the story?
Explore the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger. As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate rumors of a spreading plague with a secret that threatens to destroy everything. Can you save the island and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them apart?
