I’ve been playing Farming Sims for around 20 years. The first one I remember playing is Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life on the GameCube.
What is a farming sim? It is short for Farming Simulator. It’s a game where you build a farm and live life. It is perhaps my favorite genre of video games.
Over the years, I’ve lost track of how many farm sims I’ve played. But it’s been fascinating to watch them grow and develop from where they were 20 years ago.
That being said, there are a lot of them to choose from and every year more are released. And, if you’re not familiar with the genre, it can be a bit overwhelming to know just where to start.
Let me suggest my favorite as a jumping point into the genre and also suggest an upcoming release.
Stardew Valley
A quick check in my Steam Library shows that I’ve almost 100 hours logged in this game. For me, this game combines both the nostalgic feel of older farming sims with some of the newer features that we’ve grown accustomed to.
Alongside that is a rich and colorful cast of townsfolk. On my most recent play through, I courted a new suitor from my usual go-to and found that by zeroing in on one, I missed a lot of rich backstories.
But why is this game a good launching point for someone to get to know the farming sim genre?
While over time, you can gain a lot of extras within the Valley, at the beginning, it is a simple game. You have your plot of land, you have villagers to meet, and a new life to begin.
Not to mention, there is a detailed Wiki to help you every step of the way.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
When the idea for this banter came in my head, I absolutely had to put this down as an option. Almost 20 years later, a remake of my first ever farming sim is now available to play.
Released yesterday, this game is a more simplistic farming sim than people are used to. But for me, that is part of the charm.
