I have played Mario Kart since the GameCube. Let’s take a moment to note that I did not say I played it well.
Back then, there was a co-op mode where you could team up on the same car. One person drove and the other got to throw whatever shiny things you’d managed to accumulate.
And that was the mode I played the most. My little brother drove and I threw shells like there was no tomorrow. Not only was it a great way to spend time together, but it brought the game to a level that at the time worked for me.
Over the last few months, I’ve started playing Mario Kart 8 with friends. One thing I’ve been trying are different ways you can use Joy-Cons to play the game. Now, I wasn’t looking at different Joy-Con combinations, that happened by accident.
But, one afternoon, I found the best set up for my play style.
When you use a single Joy-Con, you turn it into a steering wheel. Instead of using directional buttons to steer your cart, you do it like a car.
Now, I should have known that this would be a method I’d favor because I used the steering wheel with the Wii controller back in the day. Better late than never, I guess.
By having a steering wheel, it helps me to be able to focus on banking more, strategically place items to sabotage both NPCs and my friends, and to have a good time.
It also had the benefit of helping me do better. I even beat out some of my friends, once.
