Hayao Miyazaki is back for his final feature film project, The Boy and the Heron, after delaying his scheduled retirement.
The debut of Miyazaki’s most recent work arrives after seven years of waiting. The movie will have its world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and will have a theatrical run in the United States later in 2023 as it is already playing in Japanese cinemas. However, Studio Ghibli’s marketing strategy has drawn notice since it opted not to distribute trailers, pictures, or plot summaries when the movie was first released in Japan.
The studio has announced additional screenings at various film festivals, including the San Sebastian Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, where the film will make its U.S. debut in late September/early October. Alongside this, a set of official stills has been released to pique audience interest.
The Boy and the Heron is written and directed by Miyazaki, marking his return to filmmaking after a ten-year hiatus. The film draws inspiration from Yoshino Genzaburo’s 1937 story of the same name. Set against World War II, the narrative revolves around a young boy named Mahito, who relocates to a rural village under the care of his stepmother Natsuko after his mother’s passing. His encounter with a gray heron, which designates him as the “long-awaited one,” sets him on a journey reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, as he embarks on a quest to rescue his family by venturing into a magical underground world
The film features an original score by Joe Hisaishi, a longstanding collaborator of Miyazaki’s.
