Star Wars: Dark Forces Returns – Nightdive Studios Remasters One of the Best Doomclones of 1995

2–3 minutes

Nightdive Studios, the developers responsible for the recent remake of System Shock and the remaster of Quake 2, have announced their latest project. They are remastering Star Wars: Dark Forces, one of the finest early first person shooters. The remaster is expected to arrive before the end of 2023.

The remaster runs in Nightdive Studios’ KEX Engine, supporting 4k at 120 FPS. It features advanced 3D rendering, modern gamepad support, and achievements. The game will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam). It will retail for $20-30, and is expected to release by the end of the year.

More than a simple Doomclone like many games of the time, the team at Lucasarts refined and expanded the gameplay significantly. Star Wars: Dark Forces was one of the first games of its kind with truly multi-story levels, 3D models, and a fleshed-out, cinematic story.

The game also introduced Kyle Katarn, one of the most popular Star Wars characters. He would later go on to lead in the Jedi Knight games, but in this first installment he relied on little more than his blasters. Fans of more recent efforts in the franchise will recognize that a significant amounts of material and background in the Disney+ series are culled from the events of this game.

This announcement follows only a few months after the truly incredible fan-restoration and source port of the game produced by the Force Engine team. Nightdive Studios’ Remaster is faithful while providing updates some prefer, while Force Engine is aims for authenticity. There is enough room in the world for both projects, so I hope that Nightdive Studios and the executives at Disney honor the fan team’s efforts to preserve the original game.
