As you might have read in our diary entry from day three of PAX West, I got to test out Button City Soccer Days with my Editor-in-Chief David Lasby. Button City Soccer Days is a spinoff of Button City, a game where you play as a little anthropomorphic fox, Fennel, who sets out to save his local arcade. Button City features a lot of mini games that span many styles and genres. Soccer Days hones in and focuses on just one game. Soccer!
Button City Soccer Days features many of the same elements from its previous title. The vivid, eye-popping color palette is here. The cast of cute anthropomorphic animals are all here. What sets this spin-off apart is its appreciation for all things soccer.
As someone who used to play soccer recreationally, this game hit home.
One thing I look for in games is how self-contained they are. I am happy to report that Button City Soccer Days is self-contained.
I didn’t want to leave the booth after we were done playing. I could have lived in that world forever.
The dev team at Subliminal is made up of only three people. Their passion shines through every pixel. The devs just want you and a friend to participate in a low poly, low-stakes soccer match (or multiple matches depending on how competitive you and your friend are). There’s a story to the game where you can train in between matches as well.
Don’t be fooled by their cute faces! You might just get the ball stolen from you in a slide tackle! One thing that impressed me the most about Button City Soccer Days is how dexterous the characters were. This might sound a little harsh, but when I first heard about this game, I dismissed it as being an oversimplified game cashing in on the cutesy aesthetic. I’m so glad I was wrong. Matches can get intense! The character you control can sprint, kick, jump, slide tackle, and even perform headers!
In my opinion, this will make for a great Switch title when it releases.
