Editor’s Note: This banter may contain slight spoilers for Final Fantasy XVI regarding Eikon abilities.
My recent playthrough of Final Fantasy XVI was a blast, but one of the most fun changes was the game’s approach to summons.
In this iteration, players called upon Eikons, which are known as summons in past games. Each one invoked a specific power tied to the various elements. While it was disappointing that there were no elemental advantages or weaknesses in this game, the mechanic was a blast to use.
There are eight Eikons in the game that Clive can use, each with their own unique abilities and attacks. Of these eight Eikons, which was your favorite to use?
I thought Titan was the best Eikon in the game in terms of attack and power. I loved using Titan’s abilities because of how powerful they were in any given moment.
Sure, Titan’s abilities are slower to unleash at full power, but I found them so useful even when they weren’t at a full charge.
What also made Titan so great was it was a good mix of offense and defense. I found myself using Windup and Upheaval so much offensively, but Titanic Block made for some satisfying defensive abilities.
Titan was so great to use because you got him early enough in the game that you had time to master his abilities. It wasn’t that it was hard to master Titan, but having that much time with him made for a lot of creative ways to use his abilities.
One that I wish we had more time with was Odin. You unlock the Eikon of Darkness late in the game and he has a lot of fun abilities. The problem is you’re knocking on the endgame’s doorstep by the time you get to use it.
I think Odin would be just above Titan, for me, had I got more time with him. The other one I did really enjoy is Bahamut.
In the other two Final Fantasy games I’ve played, I’ve always enjoyed summoning Bahamut. An absolutely fantastic battle with Bahamut proceeds the absorption of his abilities but, for me, it took a bit to master. This doesn’t make Bahamut bad by any sense, but rather I never felt like I fully utilized his abilities.
Next to the story, I thought the Eikon abilities were one of the best parts of Final Fantasy XVI. While many complained about the lack of party members, I saw these Eikons as a substitute for this as you could only have three equipped at any time. This led to some fun strategies.
