Boss Rush Banter: What Do You Think of the New PlayStation 5 “Slim”?

The PlayStation blog dropped vital information about the updated model for the PS5, which will be available this holiday season. It truly looks like a skinny version of the existing behemoth base model, with a few differences. So…what do you think of the latest PS 5 model?

Firstly, let’s review what makes this new model different:

  • It’s truly lighter and skinnier: volume is trimmed by 30% and weight is trimmed by 18% and 24% (disc and digital-only versions, respectively)
  • There are four panels to the console versus two
  • There will be an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive available
  • 1TB SSD internal storage
The attachable disk drive will be $79.99 USD

The price is as follows:

  • PlayStation 5 with disc drive – $499.99 USD
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $449.99 USD

In my humble opinion, this doesn’t move the needle for me at all; however, this is because I already own a PS5. Yes, it’s a chonky boy, but this new model still has this odd shape. I have little incentive to trade it in for the new model. I will say that for those who have yet to purchase a PS5, the sleek new model would be a perk. The 1 TB is also a perk, but the base model has 825 GB. That’s pretty darn close, and if you follow sales, it isn’t hard to find a 1 TB card on sale and invest in.

Lastly, I find it odd to present a digital-only model where you can buy an attachable disk drive…when they already sell one with the disk drive attached. Purchasing the digital-only with the attachable disk drive would cost more compared to just buying the one with the disk drive built in. I just don’t think the disk drive makes or breaks the size of the console to have it separate.

I’m not sure why Sony maintained such an odd shape to the device, but I hope they are able to meet the demand when the new model releases in November. Since this is clearly a home console and not meant to be portable, a little less “chonk” and weight just doesn’t mean much to me.

As you say, it is an odd move. I’d also say it’s tone deaf to what people might actually want out of a refresh, if it weren’t for the extra storage space. Along with the Portal, I have a hard time guessing what kind of buyer they are trying to entice. Seems like a pretty small demographic.
