Best Buy confirmed it will be ending its in-store and online DVD and Blu-ray disc sales in early 2024.
A Best Buy spokesperson told Variety about the discounted sales of physical media.
“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago. Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover and enjoy.”
Best Buy will offer physical DVDs and Blu-ray discs of movies and TV series online and in stores through the 2023 holiday shopping season before ending sales in the new year. The company will continue to market video games. Best Buy had 1,129 stores as of mid-2023, with 969 of them in the US.
With Best Buy’s withdrawal from the market, Walmart, Amazon, and Target will be the top three retailers in the United States selling DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Redbox, currently owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, is also still in the physical-disc game, with a network of around 29,000 rental kiosks nationwide.
For years, sales of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs have been declining as streaming video has grown. According to the data from trade group DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, physical media income in the United States fell 28% in the first half of 2023, to $754 million, from $1.05 billion the previous year. After more than 35 years in business, Ingram Entertainment, a renowned DVD distributor, recently announced that it would cease operations.
