Genshin Impact has 10.878 million words written into the game as announced in the 4.1 livestream. These words include all of the flavor text in the game that builds the world and expands it beyond the main story. Many theorists have utilized these millions of words in order to create amazing theories about the story of Teyvat. Some theorists have made connections between the traveler and the dragon sovereigns of each nation, and there are many more theories discussed amongst the community. What are some of the most interesting theories of this game, then?
An intriguing theory that came out pretty early in the game’s development is the idea that Teyvat may be the representation of Hell. This theory came about for numerous reasons. Firstly, all of the archons have multiple names: their character name and their god name.
Venti is the god of Mondstadt who is also named Barbatos. Zhongli’s godly name is Morax. Raiden Shogun is also given the name Baal. The two most recent Archons Nahida and Furina also have the names of Buer and Focalor respectively. All of their godly names coincide with the names of powerful demons who rule over a legion of demons, a similar concept to the way the archons rule over their nations. Additionally, the traveler’s guide Paimon also shares the name of a powerful demon. That is a lot of demonic names in one storyline that does not appear to be about demons at all.
Furthermore, various characters have been called “sinners” in the game. Primarily, any person from Khaenri’ah is called a sinner because they went against the godly power of Celestia, denouncing all gods and wanting a claim for humanity. In the most recent nation, the people of Fontaine are called sinners which is why they have a prophecy foretelling their doom. Even the traveler, the main character, who although not called a sinner is told that they are targeted by the unknown god because of the “arrogation of mankind.” Essentially, mortals are attempting to take power they were never supposed to obtain — mainly, godly power — which is seen as a sin against the higher powers.
In this theory, the structure of Teyvat and its worldly order seems to point to the idea that it is a recreation of or a symbolic Hell. There are even more connections that UnavaliableUsername_ on Reddit further made to support this theory.
The theory that the traveler is connected to the dragon sovereigns is one that has become more prevalant recently. Each nation has a dragon sovereign, all of whom were ruled by a dragon king that could control all of the elements. In fact, as revealed in the recent 4.1 Archon Quest, a part of the dragons’ powers were taken by Celestia to create the gnoses, the very symbol of the archons’ power and authority over their nations.
At first, theorists were connecting the traveler to the archon themselves since some of their skills resembled theirs. However, as more dragons were revealed throughout the nations, primarily as bosses, players began to make more connections between the traveler’s abilities and the dragons’.
The traveler’s Anemo abilities of making a tornado is like that of Dvalin’s attack move. The Geo traveler’s burst spurts out jagged rocks all around him much like Azhdaha from Liyue. The traveler’s burst into a mushroom shape is akin to Apep’s own mushroom attack. Finally, Neuvillete’s hydro cannon charged attack and utilizing source water droplets is similar to the traveler’s own water bubble attack and generate source water droplets when held on.
Additionally, the dragon king could utilize all elements in Teyvat while the traveler is slowly gaining the ability to use all the elements of the world which is an interesting parallel. Ashikai uploaded a recent video that further delves into this theory and how this could make the game’s protagonist even more important in the overall history and future of Teyvat.
There are many more theories about the world of Genshin Impact and its possible connections to the traveler’s story players are experiencing. What do you think is the most interesting theory about the game? Share your thoughts in the comments below or in our Boss Rush Discord!
