Video games have been around for a long time, which means there are plenty of franchises that have established themselves over the years.
Regardless of what the genre is, there’s likely a series that has been there for decades. Some, like The Legend of Zelda or Final Fantasy, date back to the 1980s while others, like Call of Duty or Halo, are relative newcomers.
These franchises stick around because they are popular and people keep buying the games. If not, the series would fade into obscurity.
While many of these series have the staying power, they don’t always click with all gamers.
So which long-running series are you fine skipping? For me, it’s Far Cry.
Far Cry is a first-person shooter from Ubisoft that debuted in 2004 with Far Cry. The series has six mainline games, all of which are standalones, along with numerous spinoffs.
Though the narratives are not connected, gameplay is similar across all games. The protagonist usually plays within a wilderness setting, helping take down the local despot.
I’ll admit, this series has intrigued me at times. Later games go all out in bringing in voice actors to the series. Michael Mando (Far Cry 3), Naveen Andrews (Far Cry 4), and Giancarlo Esposito (Far Cry 6) have all lent their voices to the series.

I’ll admit, Esposito in Far Cry 6 looks really enticing given his work as the villain in Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian. At the end of the day, it’s the gameplay that doesn’t appeal to me.
I’m already not a big fan of shooters. I just don’t enjoy them as much as others. I’d much rather mow down armies with a sword or a bow-and-arrow combo.
That said, Far Cry Primal may be up my alley since it takes the Far Cry formula to the Stone Age. I’m willing to leave the door open, but I’m just not that interested in the series.
I realize this question is super subjective. We’re all going to have our personal preferences that will shape which franchises we like. That could all change as our interests shift.
I’ve recently fallen in love with the RPG genre. Prior to this shift, I would’ve said Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest are two franchises that didn’t intrigue me. Now, Final Fantasy games are among my favorite.
So what about you? Which long-running franchise just doesn’t interest you? What about that franchise has turned you off from the series? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.
