Maybe it was something I saw in passing or I heard someone say a phrase that sparked a memory, but I’ve been thinking about my childhood lately. What part you might ask? Just check the title.
And I’m not talking like your basic 2K’s, Madden’s, or Fifa’s – I’m talking about the stuff they don’t release anymore. The type of games that raised us and still hold a place in pop culture all these years later. The ones that you got excited to play late into the night and are part of the memories you have when you think back on your younger years. You know what I’m talking about?
But is it even possible to decide which sports game you wish they’d bring back? There’s been so many great ones, how could you possibly even remember all the good ones? Fear not, because I’ve got a few that might jog your memory.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Series
The premise was simple, the controls were easy, and the fun was infinite. The series offered its players the chance to do some sick tricks at some crazy locations and it was everything. I don’t know if it’s even possible to count how many points I racked up over the years, but the number is large. Sadly the series hasn’t put anything new out in a while, but if they decided to release something, there would certainly be an audience waiting for it.
NBA Jam
“BOOMSHAKALAKA!” The phrase every player wanted to hear when they played this fast-paced beauty. Originally meant for the arcade, it was re-done and made into a console game in 2010 and was an immediate cult classic. It combined over-the-top animations, power-ups, and competition while allowing gamers to play as their favorite teams. If they ever made a new version with updated rosters, I’m sure they wouldn’t have trouble finding interested people.
Backyard Baseball
In a word, perfection. This might be my favorite game of all time and it’s not that close. It turned baseball into an entertaining video game and its playable characters were all kids with different power-ups, which just added to the lore. If you mention the name Pablo Sanchez to anyone who’s played this before, chances are they’ll light up and grace you with their favorite moments while using him. The Backyard Series also expanded into football and basketball, but the baseball one stood above the rest. Bring it back!
What Do You Think?
Now, there are plenty of sports games that deserve a second chance with a new audience. Franchises like NCAA Football and NFL Street still have a loyal fanbase and would probably do well if they were ever released again, but these three are just the ones I want most.
So what do you think? Do you hope any of these return or should they all stay in the past? Share your reactions in the comments below or join in the conversation on Boss Rush Network’s Discord and Facebook.
