For the second year running, Steam has released their Year in Review: a kind of Spotify Wrapped of PC gaming. They collate your stats, mark your playtime, and mark certain metrics against the median Steam user (for example, most Steam users only play four games per year).
There are always surprises and unexpected realizations when you’re faced with such stats.
23% of my overall Steam playtime was spent battling against the maddening, unfair grind of Like a Dragon: Ishin!; while I loved the story, the grind and poorly conceived changes to the gameplay dragged the experience down. This comes from a man who genuinely enjoys slowly chasing true 100% in each Yakuza / Like a Dragon game.
It’s also a reminder that stats also never quite tell the truth. By the numbers, my favorite games included Ishin! and several grindy multiplayer games. But my favorite games, that I mostly reached a higher degree of completion playing, were much more concise experiences: En Garde!, Moonring, and World of Horror, or my favorite games from recent years that I played or replayed this year, Signalis, Mirror’s Edge, Battle Brothers, and Alien: Isolation. I have 20 hours in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, but that largely consists of build testing and trying the DLC prequel campaigns just to decide what kind of character I want to bring into the campaign.
What surprised you most about your Year in Review?
