There is no shortage of renditions of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, so let’s make our own.

Obviously, this exercise is ridiculous, but can be a lot of fun. There’s way too much tribalism and anger in gaming already so let’s lighten the mood a bit. Which video game characters would you cast in A Christmas Carol?

For me, I’ll take the Nintendo route as I feel like a Nintendo-themed A Christmas Carol would be an absolute joy to watch.

Ebenezer Scrooge: I would put Waluigi in this role. While he might not have the greed that Wario does, I think Waluigi embodies the curmudgeon nature of Scrooge. Besides, somebody should be fired if Scrooge Waluigi doesn’t say, “wah humbug!”

Bob Cratchit: This is a hard one to pin down, but I think I give it to Link. While mostly silent in the games, Link shows a sense of kindness and devotion throughout all his appearances. I think his portrayal in Twilight Princess would fit this role perfectly.

Jacob Marley: Wario and Waluigi are seen as mischief makers together so it seems natural that Wario would be the departed meiser. Wario is always associated with a gluttonous greed and that could be his undoing as Marley. 

Tiny Tim: Ness is the embodiment of Tiny Tim. Ness cares about his friends and is willing to help them. He does this with a loving and sweet attitude. The role of Tiny Tim needs to be loving in the face of trials so Ness fits that perfectly.

The Ghost of Christmas Past: Pit from Kid Icarus goes here. The young angel is innocent and devoted in his service to Palutena. I think he carries that over to this role, providing a child-like innocence to showing Scrooge his past.

The Ghost of Christmas Present: This character is all about being warm and jovial so Daruk from Breath of the Wild fits this perfectly. When not battling, Daruk comes across as someone who would just make you feel good about yourself.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come: Dark Samus always wanders menacingly around in Metroid Prime 2 and 3 while never speaking. This fits the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come perfectly.

While there are many other roles you can fill out in this hypothetical casting, I think this main cast embodies the heart of the tale, at least as much as it can for being with Nintendo characters.

Some other roles I would fill would be:

• Princess Zelda as Emily Cratchit
• Donkey Kong as Mr. Fezziwig
• Luigi as Scrooge’s nephew Fred
• Princess Daisy as Scrooge’s lost love Belle
