If you regularly play tabletop RPGs, odds are that you have a set of dice which are your golden children, and you have a prison for the misbehaving polyhedral random number generators when they repeatedly crit in the wrong direction. However, no amount of moonlight will cure a bad rolling style, so maybe dice towers are the solution.
Dice towers are a fun, aesthetically pleasing solution if you cannot physically roll or if you don’t feel like it. They’re also useful to keep things contained. Like the multiple companies that stepped up to create numerous styles of dice for those players keen on hoarding shiny bobbles, others arose to build accessories, including dice towers and rolling trays, but they have another purpose too.
Many of the players who use dice towers believe bad luck is catching. In table top RPGs, the dice guide the story, and it’s common to blame the dice if things go wrong. Even dice trays which serve to help keep everything contained get their share of the blame when present. With a combination of a tray and a tower, a player has three items to take the blame.
Whether you want a dice tower because you found one that looks like the Dark Tower or because you’re willing to do whatever it takes to roll above a five on your D20, collect whatever floats your boat. If you have a 3D printer or some wood and the right tools, there are plenty designs online, so if you’re the sort of table top player who has a single set of dice and no add-ons, you might not understand the urge, but where else can you role-play being a dragon and grow your hoard?
