I’ve been aware of the Monster Hunter franchise for years now. In fact, I played Monster Hunter Stories 2 a few years ago based on a friend’s recommendation.
Part of the problem was that I needed a computer to run the game. That problem was fixed over the holiday season. Another problem was that I was intimidated by the series. There were a lot of games, and despite reassurance from a friend that I’d be fine, it felt overwhelming.
Last month, Steam put Monster Hunter World into their Winter Sale for less than $10. With that, I was officially out of excuses. But a friend bought it for me before I could because they knew I’d enjoy it.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve started venturing into the world of Monster Hunter. And let me tell you, I’m hooked. I don’t feel lost in this world as someone who’s played very little of this series.
The gameplay is smooth, and there’s a great mix of side/optional quests alongside the main story. In some ways, they complement each other. Thanks to friends who are veterans of the franchise, I’ve discovered how to pair optional quests to help me accomplish my main storyline goals.
There’s been a resurgence for the game thanks to Capcom’s Return to World campaign. This means I’m seeing people chat about it in numbers that haven’t been seen since it came out.
That also means that there are new fans like me that get to share our excitement.
Still, I wish I’d played sooner. With Monster Hunter Wilds coming in 2025, I hope and plan to play my way through the rest of Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise to be ready.
