At first I thought it was a coincidence, but I’ve heard from several people that they wish to tackle their backlog this year as a “gaming resolution”. After a year that presented us with hit after hit, it does make sense to step back and take a deep breath. Is 2024 the epitome of a backlog year?
In addition to myself, several members of the Boss Rush community are focused on that backlog. Also, amazing content creator, @orbalology, created a Tackle the Backlog series!
What exactly does this say about video games in 2024? It would be cheap to already conclude this year is a bust for good games, and a humble roadmap at this point in January is to be expected. So far, we only had one major showcase from Microsoft.
The Xbox Developer Direct provided insight for several games releasing this year such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Avowed, Visions of Mana, and ARA: History Untold. We are still waiting on a Nintendo Direct, Sony State of Play, and Indie Showcases. Therefore, it is too soon to tell if 2024 will be a repeat of 2023.
This sentiment to tackle the backlog is probably more of a reaction to 2023 and a relatively slow January. I’m sure in time, the backlog will once again be shelved in favor of something new and shiny. I will say though that the backlog deserves time to shine. Although we meagerly chip away at the long list of games, I’m excited to revisit video games that were long forgotten and provide another opportunity for discussion.
For me, I’ve already played and beat Inscryption and loved it. I hope to tackle LiveALive, Ghost Trick, and West of Loathing to name a few.
