Game Freak just announced during the Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase that they are remastering Pocket Card Jockey as Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! The remastered version as well as the demo will be released today on the Nintendo eShop, and the game costs fifteen dollars.
The game’s main feature appears to be its card game. It uses card mechanics for players to aid their horses in the race. From the trailer, the player’s progression through the card game grants them special bonuses and events in the race that push them to victory.
The trailer states that the card game is similar to solitaire. From the short amount of footage shown, players must numerically line up the cards from the numerous decks on their screen. The number of decks appears to change as in one part of the demo, there are five decks, but in another, there are seven.
Furthermore, there likely are multiple rounds of decks seeing as there is another screen that says, “3 ROUNDS LEFT.” This is likely why the number of decks that appear for players is different as they could change for each round.
Several other elements of the game’s trailer make it appear more enjoyable. With each race won, the horses gain experience. If the game follows its predecessor’s mechanics as shown in the demo back in 2016, when horses level up, they should also increase their stats.
In a brief moment during the trailer, it is possible to see that underneath the horse’s experience bar are the stats of the horse. It also reveals that either each horse or perhaps only specific horses will have abilities that make them more suited for winning races.
Horses can be bred in the game. As players progress, the trailer mentions they will gain horses. The breeding system will likely be set up to allow players to manage the stat distribution of horses or simply their appearances.
From the preview pages on the Nintendo eShop, it appears that there is a stage map set up for advancing the player through the game. There are roadblocks in the image and other paths for the player to take which insinuates that there are set conditions that need to occur for players to participate in every single stage. This is likely the single-player version of the game as the demo mentions there is a multiplayer option for players to race against each other.
The game appears to be an enjoyable and relaxing game set up for players to enjoy card games and raising horses to race them.
