Eleven years. That’s how long it’s been since the last time there’s been a new college football video game.
Thousands of games have been made, played, and discarded in the span of a decade — and yet none have been for college football. But that all ends in July when EA Sports releases its highly-anticipated EA Sports College Football 25!
The Madden creators finally return to the university gridiron thanks to the creation of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness), which allows organizations to pay college athletes for their services. In this case, they’re now allowed to include the player’s names in the game in exchange for $600 and a copy of the game.
So why does any of this matter in the video game world? It’s because we are watching the birth of the next great sports series before our very eyes.
That may seem bold, but it’s not without precedent. Back in the early 2000s, EA Sports previously had a franchise titled NCAA Football. It was a big hit until a judge suspended them from making any more due to player rights infringements. So they sadly had to follow the law and leave their giant fanbase without their beloved series. The last edition of the game, NCAA Football 14, quickly became a collector’s item and to this day is being sold online for hundreds of dollars (the crazy part is that’s for the Xbox 360 version!). But with NIL, the door opened for a gaming comeback and the developers seized the opportunity.
So what will make it stand out? The game is set to feature all 134 NCAA FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) teams, have every actual college athlete in it as playable characters, and include new features like NIL recruiting and transfer portals, which adds a new element to the game that players will have to figure out if they want to build a successful team.
EA Sports released a teaser trailer last week and it caught the sporting world by storm. The excitement for this nostalgic series is at an all-time high and people can’t wait to play as their favorite schools in their favorite stadiums.
Personally, I’m very excited that this game is finally back and you can bet when it releases, I’ll be playing it.
