Warhammer: The Old World was viewed as a niche project, a specialist game, with an audience to match.
Games Workshop was not prepared for the excitement and support. Four months after release, new models sell out on contact with the internet. An official tournament at Warhammer World had 60 open slots for players — and more than 200 more on the waiting list. To give an idea of the numbers in context, a major Warhammer 40,000 tournament had 340 competitors; even now, they are nearly neck and neck in number of players. Delivery of made-to-order models is slow.
This is great news! But it also means that production still needs further increase. Games Workshop is not producing enough models to satisfy their current audience, which means that there is not enough for new players to discover and join the game.
But Games Workshop has seen the popular response, and expanded the scope of the game of the game. As Danny, one of the developers for Warhammer: The Old World, said, “The game has been incredibly well received, and it’s great that there’s so much passion – the scope of the project has grown, so please bear with us.”
Why haven’t I written Danny’s last name? Games Workshop no longer credits model designers, painters, and some writers by name. This is unacceptable. As the creative force that keeps the company running, the creators responsible deserve full, clear, and public credit.
Growing pains are inevitable, but Games Workshop desperately needs to increase production and widen the scope of its tournaments. This is currently the only bottleneck holding the game back from further success.
