Alien: Romulus is only months away and 20th Century Studios has yet to release a full trailer for the film, leaving many perplexed about the promotion cycle for this film release.
Complicating matters are the shockingly low box office numbers for other high-production, critically well-received films like Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. In the case of Furiosa, the film is significantly underwater with a budget cost of $168 million and an opening weekend of $58.9 million. Fall Guy had a budget of $140 million and an opening week of $118.4 million.
While it’s hard to know what big studios consider worthwhile, particularly given how lucrative streaming and other post-release revenue sources can be, it’s a real possibility these low box office numbers will decrease the chance of future films for franchises like Mad Max once they perform poorly.
And that has me worried.
Alien is not a franchise that appeals to a wide range of audiences. Alien: Romulus appears to lean heavily into the horror elements that made the franchise iconic, a choice celebrated by fans, but one that may further limit who sees this film.
If Alien: Romulus follows the pattern of box office failures from Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, 20th Century Studios may pull the plug on future films. For a franchise that’s struggled to find its way after two fantastic opening acts, another poorly received films could spell doom.

There is some hope, however; Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has crossed $300 million worldwide as of May 26. The film was made on a budget $160 million, making it a huge success and likely keeping the powers-that-be open to future films.
Another reason for hope is that the Alien franchise has long enjoyed a thriving community outside of the films. Fans have taken the helm and through passion have carried the franchise through many dark years. This has created huge markets for video games, tabletop RPGs, NERF guns, and many other retail successes. Even if Alien: Romulus bombs at the box office, there’s a decent chance that fans will continue doing what they’ve always done and carry the franchise through the desert.
Tell us what you think! Will Alien: Romulus do well at the box office this August? If numbers disappoint, how will Disney and 20th Century Studios respond? Share your reactions in the comments below or join the conversation on Boss Rush Network’s Discord, Facebook, and Twitter.
