Supergiant Games just released the heavily anticipated sequel, Hades II, on early access. Available on PC through Steam and Epic Games, Early Access enables gamers to play through the game and provide feedback while Supergiant Games continues to develop and polish the experience. As it’s not the final product, though, the story is incomplete, and some characters will have placeholder art until a later date.
Early Access is an important development tool for the company, and I understand the value it brings to have players engaging with the game early so they can work out any issues. It’s thanks to this approach that Hades was so expertly crafted and well-received at its launch, so I’m grateful that Hades II will be benefitting from this same strategy.
Hades II‘s Early Access content is quite comprehensive, packed with new gameplay mechanics and features different from its predecessor for players to enjoy and sink many hours into. As revealed in the Early Access trailer, there are additional characters, god boons, bosses, areas to explore, and much, much more.
While I am beyond excited and thrilled that the game is available on Early Access, I think I will ultimately wait for the game to be released fully on consoles before I play it.
When I first played Hades, I hadn’t heard of it before the word of mouth from my friends to play it. I poured countless hours into the game and absolutely fell in love with it. The joy of experiencing it completely blind made the experience so special as we did runs together and shared our strategies. Meanwhile, another friend who happened to play the Early Access version described the learning curve he had from playing it early and then jumping back in after it had changed so much. It didn’t negatively impact his enjoyment of the game overall, but he wished he had waited.
For players who enjoy the roguelike structure and want to play a responsive and dynamic action game, you can’t go wrong with Hades II Early Access. For players like me, though, who want to experience the complete package all at once (and preferably on the Nintendo Switch in my case), I will patiently wait for the full game to come out. I trust with Early Access that Supergiant Games will make an amazing game that has the potential to surpass its already critically acclaimed predecessor.
