Boss Rush Banter: What Unwritten Parameters are Required on Your Next-Gen Checklist?

4–5 minutes

Having the latest system or setup is a great feeling and can be a highlight and talking point for most media connoisseurs. The rush you feel when you open and set up a new console or hold in your hand a new graphics card to put into your PC is a feeling that I remember every few years. These feelings, while common amongst gamers and media consumers, can be drastically different based on what you may consider new or next generation. I can see how we all can create our own ideas on what is considered to be new and exciting.

When new consoles are on the horizon, rumors protrude from every sector of the galaxy and even grandma has an opinion. Expectations are at a level that no matter what is added or included, somehow everyone seems to be let down with some aspect of its true specifications. When I watch YouTube and see mass amounts of the phrase, “Hype Responsibly,” or “Take this with a grain of salt,” I immediately know that whatever I’m about to hear will somewhat disappoint the picture I have willed into what I think the new console should feature and this is why having unwritten parameters of a next-gen system can upset or surprise any concrete ideas you may secretly possess.

So, when looking at various requirements of people’s ideal must haves for a next generation endeavor. I will exclude software because we can all agree that without great software what’s the point?

Graphics – Usually when talking about anything new we tie that immediately to better graphics from the previous iteration. There is some degree of what is acceptable, which usually is dependent and parallel to pricing and audience. This talking point normally creates heated discussions on either the price point because of the lower graphics creating a more affordable product or that regardless of what graphics card is used PC is more superior when looking at the combinations of setups a person can build. Graphics are important and listening to your audience, while choosing a price point can be a fine line to walk.

Innovation – Innovation can be a make-or-break situation if you are putting all your focus on it. If it is a great innovation that people adapt to then you are sure to have success but if you think the innovation is going to work and it fails in booth the consumers and the businesses eyes you may be returning to the drawing table sooner or be looking for a new career. Risk in innovation must be minimal, but as they say, “No risk, no reward.” Also, what may have worked in the past, may not conform to current day, which maybe a financial failure, but the takeaway form these failures can help vastly improve the next new idea that someone may incorporate and create a financial success.

Backwards compatibility or backlog – Having a previous library accessible to past costumers, creates loyalty and peace of mind to those who have a big library or a backlog that needs to get tackled sometime in a person’s lifetime. Adding this to any launch of a system is wonderful for consumers, but not profitable to the companies who have only sold the software once instead of reselling them the same software or a new deluxe or upscaled version of it on the latest console. I believe this feature is a must when it comes to returning costumers of a certain brand.

I’m sure many other aspects come into play when formulating a next generation list of things that should be included or at least pondered over. What would you add to this list or include as at least an avenue that should be considered when companies unveil a new way to experience media? What have you been excited for in the past and what are you currently waiting on? Let us know your thoughts on this.
