I know I’m late to the party. The animated science-fiction series Scavengers Reign first aired on Max and eventually arrived on Netflix. During that time, it has garnered a passionate fan base and accolades of the highest order; many have declared it the best science-fiction in decades.
Well, I finally watched it; and I can’t believe I waited so long to watch Scavengers Reign. I’ve been a science-fiction fan since my earliest days of consuming visual media. Stories of what might be possible, of what could lie beyond the blue-green confines of Earth, captured my imagination.
When I was old enough, I saw Aliens for the first time. Crab-like spiders that attached to people’s faces; the way they deposited a parasite inside the chest and grew terrifying monsters that exploded out of the body in a shower of blood; the Xenomorph was an unknowable terror that frightened me to my core. The inexplicable, cold, inhuman nature of the beast stripped away all sense of control and safety. It was pure cosmic horror in the Lovecraftian sense.
In the years since, the Xenomorph has become all-too-familiar (though it remains a personal favorite of mine). But I haven’t felt that sense of horror at the unknowable very often. To a degree, Netflix’s Castlevania touched on incomprehensible darkness, but it has always been firmly fantasy horror rather than science-fiction. Scavengers Regin, however, offers a masterful contrast between the hope of technology and exploration balanced against the terror that awaits humanity in the stars.
I would normally dive into specifics here; but the show is so imaginative and awe-inspiring that I will simply urge you to watch it yourself. As the crew of the Demeter attempt to survive on the strange planet they have crashed upon, they are reminded how hostile and foreign the rest of the universe really is to humanity. The animators and writers of the show manage to out-do themselves each episode and succeed in making the strange planet feel like an actual place.
