After the success of their first title, Case of the Golden Idol, Color Gray returns with a whole new mystery in Rise of the Golden Idol.
Coming to PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2024, Rise of the Golden Idol takes place in the 1970s.
Bad news: There’s been a murder.
It’s up to you to study the scenes, witnesses, suspects, and evidence in order to find out who did it.
PC gamer reported, “Where the first game was an 18th-century tale of murder and misfortune, Rise of the Golden Idol transports your crime-solving forward 300 years, and the artstyle has shifted to match. It’s not unrecognisable, but it’s lurid and seedy in a way that fits its new disco-era setting: A time of schlocky B-movies, technicolour televangelists and, well, yes, bloody murders that all seem to have some cursed thread connecting them. Some things never go out of style.”
The original game, The Case of the Golden Idol, garnered enormous amounts of critical praise, securing five stars in The Guardian, ranking third in Polygon’s Top 10 Games of 2022 and receiving ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ reviews on Steam. In January 2023, Golden Idol was also a finalist for two awards at GDC’s Independant Games Festival; Excellence in Design and the Seumas McNally Grand Prize.
It will be interesting to see how the team at Color Gray makes the jump from the 1800s with the original game to the 1970s. With 300 years between them, criminology made vast leaps and bounds.
