What is the best Quantic Dream video game?
Unless you are not into decision-based games with quick time events, you likely have heard of games like Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, and Heavy Rain or The Trifecta, if you will. As a die-hard Quantic Dream gamer, fellow gamers have asked me how these three rank. We will rank them based on gameplay, story, characters, and choices.
Let’s start with the OG, the pioneering game for most of you: Heavy Rain. Everyone knows the famous, “Shaun!” line very well. The gameplay for this at the time was great! This game has typical PS3 graphics, but such an incredible piece of art. The naturalness of the dialogue made every character more real. Without spoiling too much, the dynamic of Ethan and his family after the accident evoked such strong emotions out of little 13-year-old me. Having such a traumatic event happen within a video game just made it feel like I was peeping into a real story of someone’s life. For a moment, I forgot I was playing a video game. The consequences of this game are heart-wrenching toward the end however, they don’t feel as tough as other QD games. Final score: 8/10
Beyond: Two Souls reminds me of my college days and forcing my roommate to fall in love with this game. Spoiler alert: it worked! This game follows Elliot Page’s character, Jodie, and their entity twin, Aiden. The gameplay of this is ranked at the top because of the choice of playing in chronological order of events or the original order. Playing them both gave me a different perspective on the story, helping me understand the complexity of the story. To some, it may feel like the story is all over the place. The characters of this game are not the most well-shaped as the connections aren’t as strong. In the story, the only person we feel for is Jodie. The consequences throughout the story don’t appear to feel as final as most. However, the final decision of the game has left me puzzled, even after all of these years. As much as I have played this game, I can never seem to choose the ending for Jodie. Final score: 7.5/10
We won’t forget a classic honorable mention, the Fahrenheit series. Of course, since this is a PS2 game, the graphics weren’t the best, but that is what gave it personality and umph! This game changed the trajectory of real-life events in video games, minus the whole murder part. The characters in this game were spectacular and had lots of personality, in my opinion. The dialogue in this game is one of the best given its time. The story, although fun, drags on a bit towards the end of the game, making the ending feel dull and unsaturated based on the beginning of the game. Final score: 6.9/10
Detroit: Become Human is one of those games that stick with you forever. It has stuck with me, and definitely not because I’ve played it a disgusting amount of times to get every ending, no not at all! I believe every gamer should play this game at least once in their lifetime with no context. This game shows true morality and the choices in this game have such dramatic consequences that can haunt the player forever, or until they go back to their last save. The characters of this game show true emotion that the player can see because of the MOCAP as well as the beautifully written dialogue. As unbiased as I can be, the final score for this game is 9.5/10.
