Nintendo revealed during Tuesday’s Direct that a brand new entry in the acclaimed Mario & Luigi franchise is on its way to the Switch later this year.
Titled Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the game has the sibling plumbers setting sail in a unique nautical themed world featuring island paradises, pirates, and colossal sea monsters.
Along with familiar faces, a new species of electrical outlet-like creatures are prominent in the trailer, both as friendly residents of the tropical isles, and as enemies.
Bowser also makes an appearance, hinting that he may be the big bad once again in this new adventure.
The Mario & Luigi games began in 2003 with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and has since seen a total of 5 games plus two remakes. The last game, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr’s Journey, launched on the 3DS in 2018.
The games are similar to the Paper Mario franchise of games, along with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, in that they are RPGs with detailed stories, platforming exploration, and a combat system that focuses on timing.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the first game in the series to be released on a home console (not including Nintendo Switch Online’s GBA classic game library), and is also the first game to not be developed by AlphaDream, which declared bankruptcy in 2019.
As such, the game boasts considerable enhancements from previous entries, such as a more detailed 3D world, voice acting, and the promise of more special moves than ever before.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is scheduled for release on November 7, 2024 for the Nintendo Switch console.
